 Hello Students

As you study online, knowing online safety is very important. Online harm or abuse can affect your mental wellbeing. Knowing what online harms are would help keep your safe mentally and physically and protect you against bullies and aggressors.

Examples of Online Harms

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is when someone uses the internet to be mean to you or make you feel bad or upset

Adult Cyber Abuse

Adult cyber abuse is when someone uses the internet to send, post or share content that is harmful to the physical or mental health of an adult (18 or older)

Image-based Abuse

Image-based abuse is sharing or threatening to share an intimate image or video of a person without their consent. This is in breach of someone’s privacy.

Restricted Online Content

Restricted online content is when someone displays materials that are rude, insulting or abusive to incite violence or terrorist acts

Racial Online Abuse

Racial online abuse is targeted verbal or written abuse, threats or harassment that is racially based or motivated to cause you mental or physical harm

Report to Online Safety Regulator

Someone experiencing online harms can report the content to the platform that the material is posted, shared or displayed. If the platform does not respond or remove the material, the person can report the incident to eSafety.gov.au, Australia’s online safety regulator.

If the content is still not removed, eSafety can impose penalties on those who posted the material and those who own the platform.
