Hello Students

As you know, having Academic Integrity in your work and study is very important. That means approaching your studies, research, work and contributions of others with honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.

One way to ensure having Academic Integrity in your work and studies is to know Copyright – to know what it is and how to adhere to it.

What is Copyright

Copyright is a form of intellectual property that protects the original expression of ideas. It enables creators to manage how their content is used (The Copyright Agency). Copyright protects the expression of ideas and information in material form, such as in audio, visual, written words, an image or sound. It does not protect ideas and information themselves.

How Does Copyright Affect You

For education purposes, students, learners and researchers are covered under the Statutory Education License to use copyright materials. You are allowed to photocopy, print, scan, download, share, display copyright content.

How much?

Yes, you need to know how much content you can use so as not to in breach of Copyright. In breach of Copyright can mean plagiarism. Plagiarism can mean in breach of Academic Integrity. That you don’t want to do.

How Much Content You Can Use

·     10% of a book or one chapter (whichever is greater)

·     An image, map or illustration if it is used to explain the text

·     10% of sheet music

·     A book, text, image, play or sheet music if a new copy of that work cannot be obtained commercially within a reasonable period of time

·     An article contained in any issue of a periodical publication or two or more articles contained in any issue of a periodical publication provided they relate to the same subject

·     A play, script, short story or poem in an anthology if that work comprises not more than 15 pages of that anthology (The Copyright Agency)
